Over the next two years, we will expand the biometrics requirement to all temporary resident visa, study and work permit applicants (excluding U.S. nationals), as well as to all permanent residence applicants. Temporary visa applicants will only need to submit their biometrics once every 10 years. Phase one will begin this summer with biometrics expansion to countries in Africa, Middle East and Europe.
The collection of biometrics, such as fingerprints, is not new and is already used by Canada in all refugee programs as well as visa programs for 30 countries. Biometric data helps strengthen security screening and identification of individuals and it is standard practice in many countries around the world.
