Many readers of these monthly MP letters were fortunate to grow up, study, live or work at or near the University of British Columbia, one of Canada’s top universities. At the forefront of excellence in science, research and innovation, UBC helps train tomorrow’s workforce and contributes enormously to the knowledge and expertise that improves peoples’ lives and builds a clean, sustainable economy. The government of Canada recognized the critical role of universities like UBC with significant support in the recent budget. Budget 2016 underlines the importance of funding basic research, also known as discovery research, to attract and retain top talent to universities and seed the breakthrough technologies needed for Canada to be a global innovation leader. Discovery research funding has been squeezed over the past decade. That’s why our government added $95 million annually starting this year. To help upgrade the buildings that house these important activities the Budget also created a $2-billion, “Post-Secondary Institutions Strategic Investment Fund (SIF)”, to improve facilities at colleges and universities of which UBC received a significant share. This fund will create jobs, expand research and help develop our sustainable, forward-looking economy. Moreover it supports Canada’s climate change objectives by encouraging sustainable and green infrastructure projects. In this year of UBC’s 100th Birthday, funding basic research and the continuing excellence of our local university is a fitting gift!
