City to Launch Consultation on The Future Arbutus Greenway

It has been 15 years since the last train rumbled down the Arbutus corridor, a winding tract of precious urban space that not long ago bloomed with the fruits of local gardeners’ efforts.

Since the city of Vancouver signed a deal with CP Rail last May, people have flocked to the partially paved path to walk, cycle, skateboard and push strollers as if to explore its vast possibilities.

As the nine-kilometre corridor borders the eastern edge of Vancouver Quadra, I have been excited about its potential.

Should it be a corridor for a new streetcar, a rail line park à la New York’s Highline, for community gardens to blossom once again, an outdoor public art plaza, a walking-cycling path? The opportunities are endless.

Recognizing that this will be a citywide destination for generations to come, Vancouver city has begun public consultations.

I encourage you to visit this corridor, then bring your creative ideas to the table. You can take the City’s survey posted on its website and/or attend an open house Feb. 4 (Kitsilano Neighbourhood House, Feb. 4, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.), Feb. 9 (Marpole Community Centre, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.) and Feb. 11 (Roundhouse Community Centre, 2:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.).

You can also visit the city’s pop-up hot chocolate kiosk Feb. 1 from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. at Arbutus Street and Broadway by the Arbutus Greenway and eastbound B-line stop and from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at West 41st Avenue and West Boulevard.

For those that are interested, you can also take this online survey. Survey closes on February 15th and is available in English and Chinese.

Don`t miss this chance to make your voice heard!
