We are legalizing cannabis responsibly. It is a goal that I have long supported, including in my leadership campaign platform, and I’m excited to see it come to fruition.
The current approach to cannabis does not work. As you may know, it is often easier for our kids to buy cannabis than cigarettes. Our government aims to legalize, tax, regulate and restrict access to cannabis, to keep it out of the hands of children, and keep the profits out of the hands of criminals.
We are taking the necessary next steps toward legalization with a tax framework, designed to keep prices low enough to put criminals out of business, while helping offset the costs of education, administration and enforcement. To ensure a coordinated, cross-country approach, we are doing this in consultation with the provinces and territories and other partners.
The federal framework will be in place once cannabis becomes legally available. For more information, please visit: https://www.canada.ca/en/services/policing/justice/legalization-regulation-marijuana.html
