February 16 marks Canada’s first ever Agriculture Day. Employing 2.1 million Canadians and generating $108.1 billion in 2014 alone, the agriculture sector is one of the most important contributors to the Canadian economy. One in eight Canadians generate more than the national GDP of 2/3 of the world’s countries!
Here in Vancouver Quadra, we are lucky to have the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm. From its modest beginnings in 1915, the UBC Farm is now a leading research centre which finds solutions to transform food systems into a more sustainable path both locally and around the world. With the World Wildlife Foundation proclaiming unsustainable agricultural and aquaculture practices presenting the greatest immediate threat to species and ecosystems around the world, UBC Farm’s research is more urgent than ever. This Agriculture Day, join me in thanking Canadian farmers and to voice support for UBC Farm for the important research they do.
