Please join MP Joyce Murray at her Friday, January 19, 2018 MP Breakfast Connections with special guest speaker Labrador MP Yvonne Jones, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs for Reconciliation and Respect: Canada’s Journey to Equity.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau asserted “no relationship is more important to our government and to Canada than the one with Indigenous peoples.” The work of closing the quality of life and opportunity gap between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Canadians is a priority for me, our government, and most Canadians. This is an important justice and humanitarian goal; but more than that, it is integral to the reconciliation and respect Canada has promised its Indigenous citizens. Recognizing and rectifying the historic and shameful abuse of the first peoples who welcomed us to this land is the profoundly difficult and costly, but necessary underpinning of the journey to real equity. In addition, it will offer many valuable lessons and enhance the well-being of all Canadians.
MP Jones will update us on the progress and opportunities on the pathway of implementing the recommendations of Canada’s Truth & Reconciliation Commission, and of enshrining in policy and law international standards for the rights of Indigenous peoples.
While serving in opposition, Yvonne was the Liberal Critic responsible for Northern Development and the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency. Through her prior provincial political leadership and her volunteer work with the Battle Harbour Development Corporation, the Combined Councils of Labrador, the NunatuKavut and various literacy groups and councils, Yvonne has played a significant role in improving the quality of life for the people of her district, Newfoundland and Labrador, and Canada.
Join the conversation with Yvonne about Indigenous Reconciliation and Respect, and share your ideas about this important national initiative.
