I have been I have long been committed to ensuring the people of Vancouver have a say in the future development of the Jericho Lands. 21 hectares formerly owned by National Defence is now jointly owned by Canada Lands Corporation (CLC) and three local First Nations. This spring the three First Nations signed a deal to buy the Provincial government’s adjacent 15 hectare parcel, bringing the total area to 36 hectares of prime urban land.
The development of these lands has the potential to create a visionary, sustainable legacy for future generations, contributing to Vancouver’s status as a world-class city. As someone who lives and works in the Jericho neighbourhood, I share your aspirations and concerns about such a significant development in our midst. A successful outcome for all requires involving citizens in a meaningful way, from the outset; the many meetings I have convened, large and small, with representatives of the owners, the City, the people, and development experts, have been dedicated to that objective.
I am pleased CLC, as project manager, has agreed to my request that a representative group of residents and citizens be involved with creating the project’s consultation plan to ensure your vision and ideas are integral to the overall planning process. Stay tuned for more news in the coming months.
