VANCOUVER – The Liberal government took a significant step in its plan to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada by the end of February 2016, with the arrival of the first plane loads of Syrian refugees in cities across the country, said Joyce Murray, Member of Parliament for Vancouver Quadra today.
“Canadians here in our community and across Canada have come together in calling on their government to do the right thing, and help those forced to flee their homeland because of war and conflict,” said Murray. “Our government is proud to be welcoming Syrian refugees and offering them a new home in Canada.”
The Liberal government’s five-phase plan to bring 25,000 Syrian refugees to Canada is focused on a quick and successful resettlement, while meeting security and health needs. All processing is being done overseas, meaning that refugees coming to Canada have already undergone a thorough health and security assessment, and immediately arrive as permanent residents. Working in collaboration with provincial, municipal, and community-level partners, our government is ensuring that refugees are successfully integrated into Canadian society.
“Resettling refugees is an important part of our country’s humanitarian tradition. We believe in offering safe haven to those who need help, and that doing so leads to stronger, more successful, and resilient communities,” said Ms. Murray. “As these Syrian families build new lives here in Canada, it is heartening to see our communities come together to welcome and support them in this endeavour.”
