Canada Council for the Arts
In 1957, the Canada Council for the Arts was created to promote and celebrate Canadian art and culture throughout our country and around the world.
Since then, the Canada Council has supported professional Canadian artists and arts organizations – in all artistic disciplines – so that people from coast to coast have the opportunity to experience and enjoy the very best of Canadian culture. It offers a broad range of grants and services to professional Canadian artists and arts organizations in all artistic disciplines, including emerging disciplines such as digital arts.
The Canada Council for the Arts works tirelessly to raise public awareness of the arts through extensive communications, research, and promotion activities. The most well-known of these activities are the Canada Council’s prizes and fellowships, which celebrate creativity by recognizing exceptional Canadians in the arts, humanities, and sciences. Both the Killam Program and the internationally recognized Canadian Commission of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) operate under the general authority of the Canada Council.
Strategically, the Canada Council takes concrete steps to enrich the artistic and cultural experience of Canadians across the country. In order to further support artists, stimulate culture, and ensure it is enjoyed by more Canadians than ever, the Canada Council’s budget will be doubled over the next five years.
As stewards of the organization, members of the Board are responsible for the ongoing governance of the organization. More specifically, the Board must oversee the business conduct of the Canada Council, it must supervise management, and it must take clear action to ensure that all major issues that affect the organization are given proper consideration.

Per Diem: $310 – $375
Annual Retainer: $4,000 – $4,700

Education and Experience
- A degree from a recognized university in a relevant field of study or an acceptable combination of education, job-related training and/or experience;
- A professional accounting designation (CPA) or a law degree would be considered an asset;
- Experience in implementing modern corporate governance and best practices would be considered an asset;
- Experience in the financial and investment field would be considered an asset;
- Experience on a board of directors/trustees of a public, private or not-for-profit sector organization would be considered an asset;
- Experience in the arts community or a background in the arts either as an artist, arts professional, arts administrator or volunteer would be considered an asset; and
- Experience in the communications, social media, and media sector, such as the distribution of creative and digital content, would also be considered an asset.
If you are selected for an interview, the following criteria will be assessed:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of the mandate and mission of the Canada Council for the Arts (Council), its business activities, strategic priorities and public policy issues, as well as its governing legislation;
- Knowledge of the current challenges and opportunities for Canadian cultural institutions;
- Knowledge of the diversity of cultural practices in Canada, including non-Western forms and Aboriginal arts practices;
- Knowledge of the arts and cultural sectors, and familiarity with a range of artistic disciplines would be an asset;
- Knowledge in the areas of information technology, technological evolution related to digital, the supporting environment of national creative content, government relations, human resources or marketing would be an asset;
- Ability to identify, analyse and define priorities and strategies;
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with other members of the Council and the Council’s partners and stakeholders, and actively participate in debate and discussions among Council members; and
- Ability to recognize and address emerging issues, to seize opportunities, and to advance ideas and innovation.

Eligibility Factors and Conditions of Employment
In your application, it will be important that you confirm you meet the following requirements:
- You are expected to attend each Board meeting held at least three times per year in Ottawa.
- You should be available for conference calls when required.
- Your average annual time commitment, excluding committee work is four weeks.
