February 16, 2018 MP Breakfast Connections with guest speaker Laura Tribe on: “Who should own the Internet: Is Net Neutrality the Answer?”
Please join MP Joyce Murray at her Friday, February 16, 2018 MP Breakfast Connections with special guest speaker Laura Tribe.
Furor erupted in the United States after the Federal Communications Commission voted to repeal Net Neutrality laws. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded with his concern about the repeal, and pledged to continue defending Net Neutrality in Canada. Many Canadians are still unclear about what this term means, or the risk of losing it in Canada. Everyone who uses the internet has a stake in this important debate, rooted in the issue of civil liberties in the digital age.
Joining us to stimulate discussion and understanding of Net Neutrality’s pros and cons is Laura Tribe. Laura is Executive Director of OpenMedia, a community-driven organization that works to keep the internet open, affordable, and surveillance-free. It operates as a civic engagement platform to educate, engage, and empower internet users to advance digital rights around the world.
With her background in the intersection of human rights and information communication technologies, Laura loves the Internet and is excited to keep fighting for what makes it great. Laura has been working with OpenMedia since 2015, previously leading the organization’s campaigns and advocacy on digital privacy. Before working with OpenMedia, Laura’s experience includes working with Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE), IFEX, and various tech startups. She holds a BA in Media, Information and Technoculture from Western University, and an MA in Communications from Carleton University.
Join the conversation with Laura about Net Neutrality, and share your ideas about this important international debate.
