MP Joyce Murray Statement on National Tree Day 2018

Mr. Speaker,

Yesterday was National Tree Day. Trees are essential our lives. They provide us with oxygen, clean our water, purify our air, elevate our mood and so much more.

A tree can sequester 10 tons of carbon dioxide by the time it is 40 years old, so trees are invaluable to our battle against climate change. Not only must we take care of our forests, but we must also expand our living infrastructure within our cities.

Successive Canadian governments of all stripes have supported healthy forests, and bringing more trees into cities. That’s why Tree Canada, Canada’s leading national tree organization, has recognized the people of Canada with its coveted Eterne Award.

In 2011 this house passed a motion by MP Royal Galipeau to proclaim Canada’s first National Tree Day. Yesterday, in his honour, a sugar maple tree was planted with the Royal’s widow, Ms. Anne Pallascio and the Clerk of the Privy Council to mark this special occasion at National Tree Day 2018.
