International trade has certainly been in the news lately. Canadians want international trade and investment to work for everyone, including those most directly affected and least able to defend themselves. The Government of Canada recently delivered on its campaign promise to create an independent Ombudsperson for corporate social responsibility in Canadian operations within and outside our borders.
The Canadian Ombudsperson for Responsible Enterprise (CORE) will be assisted by a multi-stakeholder Advisory Body to help reflect Canada’s core values in the world and support our progressive trade agenda. The Ombudsperson will investigate allegations of human rights abuses, recommend solutions, and monitor their progress. They will offer a straightforward, credible and fair remedy Canadians can trust, while ensuring competitiveness of Canadian companies globally.
Independent and first-of-its-kind in the world, the Ombudsperson initially will focus on the mining, oil and gas, and garment sectors. Progressive trade only succeeds when it ensures greater respect for human rights, sustainability, here and abroad.
