My alma mater, Simon Fraser University celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
Named for Simon Fraser the intrepid explorer who charted much of what is now the province of British Columbia, a spirit of adventure lives on in SFU’s motto “We are ready!” The bold mountaintop design by renowned architect, Arthur Erikson, contributed to a young SFU becoming a hotbed of political activism, at the forefront of the peace and environmental movements. Now an incubator of innovation, research and community engagement, a mature SFU serves over 23,000 students each year at campuses in Burnaby, downtown Vancouver and Surrey.
In 2015 Simon Fraser University was once again ranked Canada’s top ‘comprehensive university’ in Macleans Magazine’s annual survey, and its long list of noteworthy students and graduates includes luminaries like Terry Fox, Olympic gold medalist Daniel Igali, and our own Prime Ministers mother, Margaret Trudeau.
Please join me, thousands of alumni and all British Columbians in wishing SFU a very Happy 50th birthday!
