Summer Update: The Environment

Ours is the most environmentally conscious government in the history of North America.

The list of recent environmental initiatives launched or completed by our government is a long one, and supports our government’s commitment to sustainability.

  • This spring another plank in the framework for Canada’s climate plan was put in place with the creation of the federal carbon tax backstop for provinces not willing or able to put a sufficiently high price on carbon pollution.
  • In June Parliament passed legislation to restore Fisheries Act protections stripped away by the previous government, eliminate the problematic National Energy Board, and strengthen environmental assessments through a new Impact Assessment Agency of Canada.
  • Budget 2018 funds a radical expansion of protected areas on land and at sea. The $1.3 billion investment will improve protection for species at risk and their habitats while expanding national wildlife areas and migratory bird sanctuaries.
  • Building on my 2016 initiative to develop our Greening Government Strategy which aims to help achieve Canada’s Paris targets, in 2017 I worked to ensure federal investments in municipal infrastructure are “climate compliant”. This project contributed to a new 2018 requirement for carbon life cycle assessments for all infrastructure projects over a $10 million threshold.
  • Last fall I began pushing for federal action to prevent and clean up Canada’s share of ocean plastic debris, consulting with local experts, and submitting recommendations to the Prime Minister, which helped inform his G-7 agenda to create an Oceans Plastics Charter.
  • Finally, over the past year I have been publicly championing a firm end date for the transition  – from open net pen salmon aquaculture to safer technologies – on Canada’s Pacific Coast.
