Working together to establish a national park reserve in South Okanagan

I am excited about our government’s commitment to establish a new national park reserve in BC’s South Okanagan. As a former BC environment minister and now MP, I have championed this project that will support the recovery of over 60 species at risk in partnership with local residents. The unique habitats range from near desert to grasslands and forests of Ponderosa Sapine and Douglas Fir, supporting an incredible range of rare wildlife and plants.

This park represents a valuable opportunity to move forward with the process of reconciliation with the three South Okanagan communities of the Syilx/Okanagan nation. I recognize significant economic, cultural and natural values of this reserve, and am confident a national park reserve will draw visitors from around the world while conserving the ecosystem for future generations.

In collaboration with the indigenous peoples, provinces, territories, and other key partners, the Government of Canada has made the ambitious commitment to conserve 17 per cent of Canada’s land and fresh water by 2020.
