Petition to the Government of Canada demanding an end to the Prorogation of Parliament and the resumption of vital parliamentary activities.

On December 30th, 2009, Stephen Harper asked Governor General, Michaelle Jean, to prorogue Parliament for the second time in just over a year.

In doing so, Mr. Harper has shown his disregard for the democratic institutions of Canada and its Parliamentary process.

The move to prorogue brings important government committees to a standstill, in particular, halting a committee charged to investigate the urgent matter of the Afghan detainees. The decision to prorogue also cancels any bills currently before the house, effectively discarding some 37 pieces of legislation. Elected and paid by the citizens of Canada, Members of Parliament have the responsibility to get back to work for the Canadians they represent.

Therefore, we the undersigned oppose the Government’s decision to prorogue Parliament until March and call on the Prime Minister to end the prorogation immediately and return to work.
